A home in Merrill was damaged by fire Sunday and a firefighter who suffered a medical issue while battling the blaze was sent to a Wausau hospital for treatment, officials said.

Crews were called just after 2 p.m. Sunday to a home at 309 Mill St., Merrill, for a report of a possible structure fire.

Upon arrival, crews found smoke coming from the home.

Merrill Fire Chief Josh Klug said the blaze appeared to originate in the living room, possibly tied to electrical equipment in the room.

The firefighter transported to Aspirus Wausau Hospital has since been released, Klug said.

No one was home at the time of the fire, which was reported by a passerby.

Merrill Fire was assisted by the Merrill Police Department, Wisconsin Public Service, Pine River Fire and Tomahawk EMS.
