MERRILL – The Lincoln County Sheriff’s Department on Monday released a warning to central Wisconsin residents that their agency is being used to work scams.

Since Friday, two residents called police to report the attempted scams. In one case, the number on the caller ID matched the Lincoln County Sheriff’s Department, said Lt. Tim Fischer. When the “target” of the scam answered the phone, rather than hearing a deputy on the other end, he instead received a robo-call offering to assist with credit card debt.

In another instance, a caller reported receiving a call on Saturday from a Milwaukee area code in which the caller stated they were soliciting funds for programs for the Lincoln County Sheriff’s Office.

The Sheriff’s Office is not soliciting funds,” Fischer wrote in a statement released today.“If you receive a scam call, hang up and let your friends and neighbors know to help educate them on the scams going around the area.”
