WAUSAU – The Wisconsin Department of Justice and local police agencies will host an event Thursday that aims to bring the community together in the wake of a mass shooting that left four people dead.
“Our community is extremely fortunate to have great local resources an
d great state partners,” said Jeff Hardel, Wausau’s Chief of Police. “(The) Wisconsin Department of Justice has partnered with local law enforcement to provide this opportunity for our community by bringing in a national speaker that will help us process the events that have occurred over past week and a half.”
The community has been reeling since March 22, when 45-year-old Nengmy Vang of Weston allegedly shot and killed two Rothschild bank employees, a Schofield attorney and an Everest Metro Police officer. Hundreds of people lined the streets to pay last respects to Detective Jason Weiland, who was laid to rest March 29.
Vang, who was injured in an exchange of gunfire with police, died early Saturday at a local hospital.
Hardel said the event will help residents cope, grieve, heal, and for some, “bring closure to an incredibly difficult situation where four members of our community were tragically murdered.”
The event is open to the public.
