WAUSAU – The Wausau Center mall will see yet another vacancy, as Payless Shoesource announced on Wednesday the Wausau location is one of nearly 400 stores slated for closure.
Payless Shoesource announced the closures, which also include the company’s Rhinelander store, as the organization files for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection. The closures are part of the company’s reorganization plans. Wausau appears on a list of “underperforming” stores the company will close in 2017.
Stores in Plover, Stevens Point, Tomahawk and Wisconsin Rapids will stay open, according to company officials. Payless, which has home offices in Kansas, operates more than 4,400 stores in more than 30 countries.
The store closure comes after several high profile stores shuttered at the mall including anchor store Sears, which closed its doors in August.
