No burning is allowed today in Wausau, as wind speeds combined with dry conditions are creating a potentially dangerous scenario.

Fire danger levels are high throughout Marathon County, according to the Department of Natural Resources. While the city of Wausau does not restrict burning during times of high risk, the local ordinance does forbid fires when winds are in excess of 7 mph. Today’s winds are gusting at more than 12 mph, according to the Wausau Fire Department.

Burning in barrels, debris piles and grassy or wooded areas, even with an annual permit, is prohibited county-wide until conditions improve.
