WAUSAU – City council members on Tuesday approved a plan by Urban Bistro to acquire the former West Side Battery building and a rezoning request for a Kwik Trip expansion on the city’s northeast side.
Urban Street Bistro will transform the Third Avenue space into a restaurant. City officials in September approved a plan to buy the building for $200,000 using a loan from the Judd S. Alexander foundation. The city also purchased the adjacent parcel in 2014 for $190,000.
Urban Street Bistro’s plan is to buy both properties from the city for a total of $225,000 to expand their business from the current food truck and catering operation it now represents. The owners, Clinton and Kelly Schultz, will then spend $660,000 on redeveloping the property for a 99-seat restaurant and bar that includes a riverfront dining patio. Urban Street Bistro’s plan was the only response to a request for proposals by the city.
City leaders also approved a rezoning request from Kwik Trip, paving the way for the company to expand the store at the intersection of Sixth Street and Wausau Avenue. The rezoning affects lots surrounding the current Kwik Trip store where homes have recently been demolished.
