Police on Monday released new details about the circumstances leading to a weekend Amber Alert and the search for an 8-year-old boy.
Jamie C. Hunt, 34, of Mosinee faces multiple charges in Marathon County Circuit Court of strangulation/suffocation and substantial battery. He is being held on a $150,000 cash bond.
Police say they responded on Saturday to a domestic disturbance in which Hunt is alleged to have beaten, strangled and threatened to kill his girlfriend, with whom he has an 8-year-old child. The call was the latest in a series of incidents at a range of locations throughout the county over the past week, police said. Hunt is facing misdemeanor disorderly conduct charges in connection with a June 5 incident, according to court records.
On the morning of June 10, police say Hunt armed himself with a machete and continued to abuse and threaten his girlfriend until she could escape. Hunt, also believed to be high on methamphetamine, then left with their eight year-old son.
An immediate attempt-to-locate was broadcast to area police describing Hunt, the child, and the vehicle they left in. The eight-year-old was believed to be endangered and missing. The Marathon County Sheriff’s Office requested a statewide Amber Alert, a process to inform the public of an endangered child abduction. The National Center for Missing and Exploited Children (NCMEC) was also contacted.
Later that day, Hunt and his son walked to an address in the town of Guenther, where Hunt turned himself in. He told police he heard the Amber Alerts on his vehicle’s radio before driving into the Leather Camp Forest Unit, where his vehicle became stuck.
Hunt was arrested and taken to the Marathon County Jail. The child was returned to his mother.
Future court dates have not yet been set.
