The search for a missing man who tried to save two children in Lake Wausau is suspended for the night.

Crews will resume the search st 7 a.m., police said.

The Marathon County Dive Team along with the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources spent hours Thursday scouring the water, using sonar to aid in the search. Rough water and swift currents hampered the search, which is now a recovery mission, police said.

The man’s name has not been released. Both children were rescued, police said.

The search was suspended at 9:15 p.m.

Dive crews continue to scour Lake Wausau for a missing man who disappeared after trying to save two children from drowning.

The man jumped into the water after a young boy, who was riding on an inner tube being pulled by a boat, slipped into the water, police said. The boy’s sister saved her brother and rescue crews pulled both children from the water.

The incident was reported at about 1:50 p.m.

One teenage girl and one young boy have been rescued from the water near the boat landing at Memorial Park, but crews are still searching for one missing person.

The initial report was received at about 1:50 p.m.

Rescue boats are patrolling the waters and crews are at multiple park locations throughout the area. Members of the dive team are in the water assisting with the search.

Police said the three people were tubing in the water when the boy fell into the water. The boy’s sister was able to rescue her brother, and both children were pulled from the water. The man driving the boat jumped in the water to try to save the boy and has not emerged from the water, police said.

WAUSAU — Rescue crews are at Memorial Park for a report of three people in the water, one of which has not emerged from the water.

Rescue boats are on the way from the South Area Fire District to assist Wausau in the recovery effort.
