WAUSAU — The search for a missing man in the waters of the Wisconsin River and Lake Wausau has come to an end.
The body of Dominic Flaminio, 41, of Rothschild,was pulled from the river at about 11:15 a.m. on Friday, police said.
Flaminio was reported missing shortly before 2 p.m. on Thursday in the waters near the boat landing at Memorial Park. Flaminio was boating near a sandbar at the park when an 8-year-old boy he was with went into the water and began to struggle.
The boy was rescued by his 11-year-old sister, police said.
Before the boy was rescued, Flaminio jumped into the water to save him and did not resurface. Rescue workers with the Wausau Fire Department pulled both children from the water but were unable to locate Flaminio, police said.
Both children were taken to a local hospital.
Dive teams using sonar searched the water for hours to no avail before suspending the search at about 9:15 p.m. Thursday. High currents and choppy water hindered the rescue effort, which is now considered a recovery mission, police said.
Rescue boats from several agencies assisted in the search. An initial request for a search helicopter was canceled after police said the wind from the aircraft’s blades could have made conditions more difficult for rescue workers.
