TOWN OF EMMET — An 18-year-old man is in fair condition after being injured in a silo explosion Wednesday in the town of Emmet, police said.

The explosion was reported at about 6:40 p.m. and happened on property on Hwy. S, according to the Marathon County Sheriff’s Department. Rescue workers and investigators from the Marathon/Oneida County Bomb Squad were called to the scene.

Investigators said the explosion was likely caused by a dangerous fuel/air mixture created when gasoline was added to a brush pile being burned inside a concrete silo, according to the incident report. The explosion injured one person and damaged the metal roof of the silo.

The man who was injured is from Illinois and is being treated at a local hospital, police said.
