WAUSAU — Fair officials say a “no weapons” rule is nothing new and has been in effect for several years at the Wisconsin Valley Fair, which runs Aug. 1 through Aug. 6 at Marathon Park in Wausau.

Earlier Wednesday, Wisconsin Valley Fair President Keith Langenhan told Wausau Pilot and Review that concert-goers would be subject to random weapons checks. He later called to clarify those comments.

“Those random checks would only be if there is some kind of suspicious activity going on,” Langenhan said. “I didn’t define that well in our earlier conversation.”

Security is being coordinated by the Wausau Police Department and the Marathon County Sheriff’s Department, Langenhan said. Neither agency’s department head in charge of security for the fair could be reached for comment on Wednesday.

WAUSAU — Prompted by a request from performer Ted Nugent, Wausau fair goers who attend live concerts will be subject to random weapons checks as they enter the grandstand area, fair officials said Wednesday.

“If we’re going to do it for one performer, we figure we’re going to do it for all of them,” Fair Board President Keith Langenhahn told Wausau Pilot and Review on Wednesday.

The Wausau Police Department and Marathon County Sheriff’s Department will coordinate security for the fair, Langenhahn said.

Nugent, who is well-known for his outspoken conservative politics and statements, has been a controversial choice for the fair, sparking a proposed boycott by the Marathon County Democratic Party. Nugent, who serves on the board of the National Rifle Association and is a fervent supporter of gun ownership rights, often shares his politics through social media and at concerts.

This is not the first time Nugent has performed at the fair. He also headlined a show in 2007.
