The Family Birth Center at Ministry Saint Clare’s Hospital, part of Ascension will hold its next Safe Sitter® Class on August 9 in Weston.

Safe Sitter® is a medically accurate, competency-based babysitting preparation course designed for students in grade 6-8 (ages 11-13) to be safe when they’re home alone watching younger siblings or babysitting.

“Injuries are the leading cause of death in children up to age 5, so today’s babysitters need to know more than just the basics of child care,” said Michelle Pagel, RN, Clinical Practice Support Coordinator at Ministry Saint Clare’s. “The lessons are filled with fun activities and role playing exercises.”

Ministry Saint Clare’s one day Safe Sitter program will discuss how babysitting is a business and what your child will need to do to be safe and successful babysitters. Included in the class are accepting the jobs that are right for you, child care essentials, infant and child choking rescue, first-aid and rescue skills, behavior management and other safety.

Safe Sitter will be held on Wednesday August 9 in the St. Francis Conference Room from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. Participants should use parking lot and entrance #2 for best access to the program on the campus of the Weston Regional Medical Center.

Advanced registration is requested and space is limited. Registration is available by calling 800.362.9900.

Cost for the class is $50 and includes a student handbook. Participants should bring a bag lunch or money for lunch in the Bread Basket Restaurant. Financial assistance is available for families who cannot afford the normal fee, please call for more information.
