ANTIGO — Charges against a 22-year-old woman in connection with the hit-and-run death of a pedestrian have been dropped, according to a news release.

Kayla Rayhut of Antigo was charged Monday with hit and run involving death, but those felony charges have been dropped. A joint news release from the Langlade County District attorney and the Antigo Police Chief states that new evidence has come to light in the death of 45-year-old Kevin Harris. that requires “further assessment and analysis.”

An investigation continues into the death and the District Attorney’s office will continue to assess whether criminal charges are appropriate, according to the statement.

Police initially said Rauhut hit Harris with her silver Nissan SUV, rolling the vehicle on top of him, got out of her vehicle to check on Harris, then got back in and rolled over him a second time with her front tire. Rayhut denied driving the car that struck Harris.

The incident happened at about 2:15 a.m. early Friday morning behind a tavern in the 600 block of Edison Street in Antigo, according to the original criminal complaint.

Police have not said what new evidence is being analyzed or if anyone else is under suspicion.
