For the first time in 10 years, a Wausau Little League team is headed to a regional tournament, taking one step closer to a potential Little League World Series title.
The Wausau Nationals, a group of 11- and 12-year-old athletes who won last weekend’s state championship, will enter tournament play Sunday in Westfield, Indiana. At 3 p.m., they’ll take on West Side of Hamilton, Ohio, in a game that will be broadcast live on ESPN 3.
In the state tournament, the Nationals got off to a shaky start, losing its first two games by a combined score of 33-5. But the team rebounded nicely, pulling off an astonishing five-game winning streak that ended in a 13-9 win over top-seeded Kenosha in the championship game.
The Great Lakes Regional is a double-elimination tournament that includes teams from Illinois, Indiana, Kentucky and Michigan. The tournament winner moves on to the Little League World Series in Williamsport, Pennsylvania, Aug. 17-27.
Best of luck to the players and coaches!
