STEVENS POINT — The driver of a semi tractor trailer suffered only minor injuries after his vehicle was struck by a train late Saturday in Stevens Point, police said.

The crash happened at about 11:15 p.m. on Prairie Street, when the northbound semi was struck by a westbound train. After the semi was hit, the train continued on with the vehicle lodged in front, striking power lines before coming to a stop about 30 feet from Wood Street, police said.

The crash left thousands of people without power for several hours in Stevens Point. It is unclear what led to the crash, as witnesses said the traffic control gates at the intersection were operational when the semi was hit.

The driver of the semi was transported by ambulance to a local hospital where he was treated for his injuries. No other injuries were reported.
