WAUSAU — Downtown Grocery’s temporary location in the Wausau Center mall is closed as of Wed., Aug. 16 as the store’s owners prepare to move back to their home location.
The store’s original space, 607 N. Third Street, was gutted by fire nearly two years ago, leaving an uncertain future for the popular downtown stop. A 16-year-old boy was criminally charged in connection with the fire, though major details of the case remain shielded from public view because he is a juvenile.
The fire left the building badly damaged and covered with soot and smoke. But after a two-year renovation, an expanded store will soon reopen in the space. Kevin and Megan Korpela, who own Downtown Grocery, operated a modified version of the store and food bar in the Wausau Center mall but have now closed that location to allow for the move back home.
A post on the Downtown Grocery Facebook page late Tuesday read: “THANK YOU to Wausau Center mall for being our home away from home, and thank you all for your patience and support!”
A firm reopening date has not yet been announced.
