City leaders will hold a public event on Sunday to celebrate Wausau’s riverfront redevelopment project.

At the “illumination event,” the city will formally activate the waterfall and fire pit along the riverfront and showcase the complete landscaping, bridge and wharf lighting features that have been under construction over the past year.

The event will be held at 8 p.m. at the south end of the new pedestrian bridge, about an hour after the Jazz on the River event behind the Marathon County Public Library wraps up. Jazz on the River this week features local artist Denise Sauter and runs from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. on Sunday.

The illumination event also marks the formal kickoff for sponsorship opportunities offered for the Riverlife area and a proposed park north of the existing development area and under the Bridge Street bridge. Among the proposed amenities: a new public concession building, fountains, play and exercise equipment, a ropes course, climbing wall and bouldering area, according to a city of Wausau news release.
