WAUSAU — Fire crews pulled three cats to safety and no one was injured in a blaze that badly damaged an east side home on Friday.

The blaze broke out shortly after 6 p.m. on the second floor of a two-story home in the 400 block of 7th Street near Jefferson Street on the city’s near east side. Flames quickly engulfed the second second story, and crews punched holes in the roof of the home while battling the blaze.

Neighbors stood and cheered as each cat was rescued from the home, even as flames reached as high as 20 feet.

There’s no word yet on what caused the fire, which remains under investigation.
