Rosemary Roehl

Rosemary Eunice (Axtell) Roehl, 87, died on August 16, 2017. She was born October 5, 1929, the youngest of 7 children, to Lloyd A. and Lora (Hill) Axtell in Pepin, WI.

Rosemary began piano at the age of 5. She played piano for Sunday school at the Methodist Church where she was a member. She attended Pepin Elementary School and High School, graduating in May 1947. During her high school years, Rosemary and a classmate provided piano music for all school functions. She played trumpet in the school band and was a pitcher on the girls’ softball team. The highlight of her summer activities was swimming in Lake Pepin- beginning on Memorial Day and ending when the water got too cold. This often required Rosemary and friends crawling under the railroad cars when the freight train was stopped at the crossing on the way to the lake.

Rosemary enrolled at the University of Wisconsin- Madison in 1947, majoring in mathematics and minoring in chemistry, biology and music. In the summer of 1948, she studied at the MacPhail School of Music in Minneapolis and worked at Bridgeman’s Ice Cream. In 1949, she transferred to River Falls State Teacher’s College. In addition to her studies at River Falls, she played in the band and accompanied the college choir on piano. She graduated with honors in 1951.

She married Reuben Roehl on August 26, 1950 in West Bend, WI. She joined her husband in Wausau who was on the faculty at the Wausau Vocational School in 1951.

Rosemary was employed by the Audit Department of Wausau Insurance. She joined Immanuel Lutheran Church with her husband and became active in Mothers’ Club, Couples’ Club, Circle and accompanied at choir rehearsals. As a young housewife she learned to sew beautifully, can vegetables, knit and developed a green thumb as evidenced by her beautiful flower gardens.

In 1967, Rosemary was asked to serve as organist for Immanuel Lutheran Church. To further her organ studies, she enrolled in the Music Department at Colorado State University, Fort Collins in the summer of 1968 while her husband completed his Master’s Degree. In 1969-70, she continued her organ studies on Saturdays at the University of Wisconsin- Stevens Point under the tutelage of John Thomas. For the next 25 years Rosemary’s routine was two practice sessions at church each week and one hour before the service on Sundays. After retiring from the bench at Immanuel, she would fill in as interim organist for congregations searching for a new organist. She especially enjoyed her time at First United Methodist. In addition to her time on the organ bench, Rosemary was very active with the Wisconsin River Chapter of the American Guild of Organists and accompanied the Wausau Lutheran Choir under the direction of Lowell Larson through the 1970’s.

In 1977 Rosemary re-entered the work force putting in two years at Wausau Homes, three years at Wausau Insurance Companies in the audit department and finishing her career life with eight years of work at the Wausau Area Chamber of Commerce. In their retirement, Rosemary and Reuben enjoyed camping, bus tours and elder hostels.

Rosemary is survived by her husband of almost 67 years, Reuben; Linda Lotito, Cornelius, NC; grandson Gregory Lotito, Charlotte, NC; and great-grandsons Casen and Camden. Robert (Pam) Roehl, Summerville, GA; granddaughter, Kristin (Ryan) Cox, Atlanta, GA. Carolyn (Derek) Melby; granddaughters, Elise and Kerste Melby, Northfield, MN; and Julie (Frank) Coffin; granddaughters, Evelyn and Eleanor Coffin, Spencer, IN; Elizabeth Coffin, Boston, MA.

Visitation will be held Friday, August 18, 2017 from 5:00 pm – 7:00 pm at Brainard Funeral Home, 522 Adams Street, Wausau. A funeral service will be held Saturday, August 19, 2017 at 2:00 pm at Immanuel Lutheran Church, 630 Adams Street, Wausau. Visitation will be at 1:30 pm until the time of service. Burial at Restlawn Memorial Park to follow.

Robert J. Karl

Robert J. Karl, 92, of Rothschild, passed away peacefully at his home on August 13, 2017.

A lifelong resident of Rothschild, Bob was born December 7, 1924 to the late Frederick and Jesse (Varo) Karl. He graduated from the Milwaukee School of Engineering and worked as a service technician for Sears Roebuck. On July 2, 1949, Bob married his one true love, Florence Eickemeyer, who preceded him in death on June 11, 2015. Robert loved his model railroad, fishing, hunting, his Green Bay Packers, and traveling by car around the United States with his wife, Florence.

Robert is survived by many nieces, nephews and friends. He is preceded in death by his wife, parents, brother Russell Karl, and sisters Marilyn Eggebrecht and Jane Karl.

A memorial service will be held Friday, August 25, 2017 at 11:00 am at Brainard Funeral Home- Everest Chapel, 5712 Memorial Court, Weston. Visitation will be held from 10:00 am until the time of service. Private burial will be held at a later date.

Shirley A. Peterson

Shirley A. Peterson, 88, Wausau and Hazelhurst, passed away on Friday August 18, 2017 with her family by her side at Our House. She was under the care of Aspirus Comfort Care and Hospice.

Shirley was born on August 26, 1928 in Wausau to the late Victor and Norma (Lemke) Jannusch. She was a 1946 graduate of Wausau High School. After school she began working at GTE typing phone books. She married Arden Krueger on May 5, 1951. He preceded her in death on March 13, 1996. Shirley then married Jack Peterson on October 10, 1998 at St. Stephen Lutheran Church, Wausau. Together they enjoyed living up north at the lake in Hazelhurst Wausau.

Shirley was a member of St. Stephen Lutheran Church for 70 years. She also became a member of the United Methodist Church of the Pines in Minocqua. Shirley was active in church choir, Ladies Circle, and a Luther League Sponsor. While living “up north” she enjoyed watching the wildlife, and spending time in the flower and vegetable gardens. Shirley’s most enjoyable time was spent with her family and church.

Shirley is survived by her husband Jack, of Wausau/Hazelhurst, son, Dr. Michael Krueger of Appleton, daughter, Jodi (George) Clements of Afton, MN, step-sons John (Molly) Peterson and Scott (Marilyn) Peterson both of Wausau. Shirley is further survived by grandchildren: Andy, Jason, Greg, and Ellie, along with five step-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband Arden, and daughter infant Debra Sue.

Funeral services for Shirley will be held on Tuesday August 22, 2017 at 11:00 a.m. at St. Stephen Lutheran Church, 512 McClellan St, Wausau. Pastor Jennifer Dahle and Pastor Mark Gilbert will officiate. Visitation will be Tuesday from 10:00 a.m. until the time of service at the church. Burial will be in Pine Grove Cemetery. Donald Rudolph

Donald Rudolph was a man who always thought of his family and friends first. Whether it was sharing his huge vegetable garden, making firewood, cooking maple syrup with the neighborhood friends or helping the grandkids fish at their cottage up north, Don loved providing for others.

Don was born January 22, 1945 in Menominee Falls to the late Elmer and Beatrice (Behling) Rudolph. Don served in the U.S. Army in Panama Canal from 1963-1966. On September 30, 1967, Don married Suzanne Lueck at Grace Lutheran Church in Menominee Falls. They moved to their town of Hamburg farm, where they were involved in dairy farming and growing ginseng. Don had also hauled feeder pigs, worked for S.D. Ellenbecker and Sonoco before retiring. In his younger years, he played slow pitch softball but recently he enjoyed dartball. Every year he looked forward to deer hunting season.

At the age of 72, Don passed away at his home surrounded by family on Tuesday, August 15, 2017.

Survivors include his wife, Suzanne of Athens. four children, Mike (Lora) Rudolph of Athens, Kimberly (Brian) Boesl of Athens, Tracy (Todd Schlichting) Wendt of Merrill, Heidi (Kevin) Denzine of Athens, ten grandchildren, Nick, Nicole, Brooke, Shannon, Shay, Erika, Tucker, Ramsey, Paige and Jake, one great grandson, Aiden and two sisters, Rita (Tony) Schumacher of Clintonville and Kathy Noet of Wausau.

Funeral services will be at 11:00 a.m., Saturday, August 19, 2017 at Trinity Lutheran Church, Athens. Reverend Mark Schwalenberg will officiate. Burial will be in Salem Cemetery with full military honors presented by Athens VFW Post #8527 and American Legion Post #4. Charles Matsche

Charles H. Matsche, 88, Wausau, peacefully passed away on Saturday, August 12, 2017 at Applegate Terrace surrounded by his family under the care of Aspirus Comfort Care and Hospice Services.

Charles was born on December 10, 1928, in the Town of Aniwa, Shawano County, to the late Jacob and Anna (Resch) Matsche. Charles served in the US Army during the Korean War. Charles married Lila Fromfeld on April 30, 1955 in Birnamwood, who survives. Charles worked for 30 years with Murray Machinery as a machinist before working for a time with his cousin at Resch Tile.

Charlie rarely found time to sit, still enjoying tinkering in his basement and around the house and working in his garden. He tenderly cared for his mother for many years. He was very proud to be a “foster” grandpa to his many nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews and dearly loved each of them. Over the years, Charlie was a member of the VFW and St. Matthew’s Men’s Club where he was very energetic with their many activities. Free time often found him playing cards with the boys or going to the hunting cabin for many years with friends and family.

Charles is survived by his beloved wife of 62 years, Lila; brothers, Vernon Matsche and Norman (Alice) Matsche; his many dear nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews; extended family and friends. He is preceded in death by his siblings, infant twin brother, Alvin; brother, Richard Matsche and sister, Edna Fischer.

The Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11:30 AM on Thursday, August 17 at Saint Matthew Catholic Church, Wausau. Fr. Robert Thorn will officiate. Friends and family may visit on Thursday at church from 9:30 AM until the time of service. Entombment will be at Restlawn Memorial Park Mausoleum at a later date. Berneice Jones

Berneice “B” & Bernie” I. Jones, 85, Wausau, passed away Wednesday August 16, 2017 at home under the care of Aspirus Comfort Care and Hospice Services and her family and friends. Berneice was born on November 4, 1931 to the late August and Bertha (Schmidt) Zimmerman in Wausau. On February 21, 1953, she married the late Lyle O. Jones. They were married 63 years until Lyle’s passing last August.

Berneice was a woman with a very, very big heart and a wonderful sense of humor. She loved cooking and baking for her family, especially the boys. She always made plenty so there would be enough to take some home. Her many enjoyments were playing cards and board games with her children and grandchildren. She enjoyed gardening and always flourished her yard with colorful flowers. She loved to go on many walks with her husband and stop for lunch after. She will be greatly missed by family and those who had the privilege of knowing her.

Berneice endured many hardships including the loss of her son Ricky at an early age, her husband and her much loved grandson Jeff Jr., both within six months. She missed them dearly.

Survivors include her children; Sally Jones, Weston, Barbara Jones-Milton, Rhinelander, Jeffrey J. Jones Sr., Mosinee, Timothy Jones, Wausau and Amy Jones, Kronenwetter; 10 grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; two sisters, Mildred and Arvilla and two brothers, Lawrence and Earl. She was also preceded in death by 10 siblings.
Funeral services will be at 11:00 a.m. on Wednesday August 23, 2017 at the Peterson/Kraemer Funeral Home, 1302 Sixth St., Wausau. Pastor Chris Juvinall will officiate. Burial will be at Pine Grove Cemetery, Wausau. Friends may call on Tuesday from 4:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. at the funeral home and again on Wednesday from 10:00 a.m. until the time of service.

Derold “Click” E. Rothmeyer

Derold “Click” E. Rothmeyer, 90, Wausau, died Monday, August 14, 2017 at his home.

He was born April 13, 1927 in Brokaw, son of the late Elmer and Mabel (Kleinschmidt) Rothmeyer. On November 16, 1946, he married Delores Kolter at St. Mary Catholic Church, Wausau. She preceded him in death on January 28, 2007.

Derold worked for Wausau Paper Corp. in Brokaw for 46 years until his retirement. Among his favorite pastimes, he enjoyed bowling, fishing, hunting, traveling, taking long walks, polka music and dancing. He loved spending time with his family at the cabin in Tomahawk and taking everyone out for ice cream at the Windmill Ice Cream Shoppe.

Derold will be remembered for saying, “I’ve always lived a good life.” He will be deeply missed by his loving family and friends.

Besides his parents and wife, Delores, he was preceded in death by one brother, Ardin Rothmeyer; and two sisters, Dona Karaba and Joyce Pfantz.

The Funeral Mass will be celebrated at 11:00 a.m. on Monday, August 21, 2017 at the Church of the Holy Name of Jesus, Wausau. Rev. Peter Kieffer will preside. Burial will be in Restlawn Memorial Park, Wausau. Friends may call on Sunday from 2:00 until 6:00 p.m. at Peterson/Kraemer Funeral Home, 1302 Sixth Street, Wausau and again on Monday from 10:00 a.m. until time of services at the church. There will be a rosary service at 5:30 p.m. on Sunday at the funeral home.

Donald D. Wood

Donald Duaine Wood, age 78, passed away peacefully while surrounded by his wife, Grace, and close family members on Monday, August 14th, 2017 at Stone Crest Residence, a memory care center in Wausau WI.

Don, the oldest of 4 children, was born to George and Marie Wood in Antigo WI on April 3, 1939. The family later relocated to the Weston area where Don attended DC Everest High School, after which he served 6 months in the U.S. Army Reserves.  Don greatly enjoyed his career as a firefighter with the Wausau Fire Department and retired in 1991 after 30 years of service.  Throughout his retirement years, he continued to keep active driving tour buses and private limousines.

Don delighted in a number of interests, but mostly he will be remembered for his love of all things motorized. He loved his planes, motorcycles, cars, and boats and worked diligently at keeping them in proper repair.  Don received his private pilot’s license and was thrilled at any opportunity to fly, especially to weekend getaways with Grace.  Don and Grace loved spending their time together and took great pleasure in even the simplest of tasks, from quick errands to dining out. He was always on the lookout for a good buffet. Don’s further hobbies included muskie fishing and deer hunting.

Don will be missed tremendously by Grace Ann Wood, his loving wife of 35 years. Other surviving family members include 3 children and 5 step-children: Rachel (Keith) Jolin, Heidi (Brian) Hensel, Brenda Torgerson, Jeff (Joann) Erickson, Larry (Barb) Erickson, Julie (Paul) Bricko, Judy (Wayne) Solinsky, and Sheri (Mike) Knutson, as well as 15 grandchildren and 5 great-grandchildren.  He is also survived by his 3 siblings: Richard (Georgia) Wood, Jean Oslage, and Mary (Dennis) Berndt.

The family would like to especially thank Homme Home, Stone Crest Residence, and the Adult Day Center for all they did to love and support Donald this past year.  Time spent in the day care center was the highlight of his week… thanks for the love and attention!

A visitation will be held from 4:00-6:00pm on Sunday, August 20th at John J Buettgen Funeral Home in Schofield WI, followed by a short Celebration of Life at 6:00pm.  Sandwiches will be served.

Randy L. Ament

Randy L. Ament 64, of Merrill passed away at Saint Clare’s Hospital on August 13th, 2017. He was born to Duane and Joyce Ament on October 20th, 1952.   He is survived by one son Ty Ament, Merrill, two daughters Tisha Ament, Merrill and Angel Brunker, Merrill, one brother Duane “Mick” Ament, DePere and 6 grandchildren; Reece Ament, Trayton Ament, True Fairfield, Ryann Brunker, Josiah Lewis, and Jaylin Lewis along with his significant other Darcy Neumann.

Randy loved the outdoors which included gardening, hunting and fishing. But most of all he enjoyed spending time with his family.

We are going to miss you our Daffodil.

Matthew Ryan Salvesen

Matthew R. Salvesen, 37, of Hatley died unexpectedly on Sunday, August 20, 2017 at his home.

He was born on November 18, 1979 in Wausau. The son of the late Robert Salvesen and Mary Gene (Mazzon) Salvesen of Aniwa.

Matt graduated from Wittenberg-Birnamwood High School in 1998. He then attended Kishwaukee College in Illinois. Matt was drafted by the Chicago White Sox. He then attended UW Stevens Point where he received his bachelors degree.

On October 9, 2004, Matt was united in marriage to Rebecca Bushman at St. Ladislaus Catholic Church in Bevent. She survives.

Matt was a manager at Harvest Moon, Galloway for the past 12 years. He enjoyed hunting, fishing and spending time at his cabin in Bruce Crossing, MI. Matt played softball for Chet & Emil’s and formerly played on the Aniwa BABA for many years. He was currently coaching kid’s baseball and loved seeing the progress each child made. Family was very important to him, he especially enjoyed the time spent with his children.

Survivors include his wife, Rebecca Salvesen; four children, Ian, Rory, Milo and Monty; mother, Mary Gene Salvesen; one sister, Erin Salvesen of MN; mother and father-in-law, Jon and Sandy Bushman of Galloway; sister and brother-in-law, Amanda (Jack) Nowinsky and John (Amy) Bushman; two nieces, six nephews and many other relatives and friends.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11:00 AM on Friday, August 25, 2017 at St. Florian Catholic Church, Hatley. Fr. Greg Bohren will officiate. Interment will be in the Parish Cemetery. Visitation will be held on Thursday from 4:00-8:00 PM and again on Friday from 9:00 AM until the time of Mass, all at the church.

Elaine Mader

Elaine A. Mader, 75, of Hatley, died on Thursday, August 17, 2017 at Hospice House, Wausau under the care of Aspirus Comfort Care and Hospice Services.

She was born on July 5, 1942 in Hatley, the daughter of the late Stanley and Sophie (Pazio) Gureski. On August 5, 1967 Elaine was united in marriage to Theodore Mader in Hatley. He preceded her in death on May 1, 2014.

Elaine worked as a machine operator at Marathon Electric for 42 years until her retirement in 2003. She was a member of St. Florians Catholic church, Hatley. She enjoyed gardening and feeding and watching the birds. Elaine also enjoyed occasional trips to the casino and was an avid Green Bay Packers and Aaron Rodgers fan.  Elaine showed her love by cooking for her family and friends.

Survivors include one son, Brian (Terry) Gureski; three stepchildren, Dale (Teresa) Mader, Kentucky, Linda Draeger, Schofield, David (Kit) Mader, Kenosha; two grandchildren, Brandon (Jessica) and Heith; and three step-grandchildren, Kelsi, Paje, and Cameron; one brother in-law Melvin (Phyllis) Mader; and one sister in-law, Vernell (Robert) Calmes.

Elaine is preceded in death by her parents, husband, two sisters Gladys Vollmer and Violet Ullenbrauck, one brother Stanley Jr., and four brothers in-law, Vernon, Jerry, Jim and Eugene.

Darryl “Dick” Richard Groholski

Darryl “Dick” Richard Groholski, age 73, Iola, passed away unexpectedly on Saturday August 12, 2017 at his home due to a heart attack.

Darryl was born on December 14, 1943 in Milwaukee. The son of the late Daniel and Mabel (Armatoski) Groholski. He is survived by his loving wife Gail (Stoltz). They were married on November 24, 1962 in Milwaukee. Darryl retired from Ladish Drop Forge Company of Cudahy in 1992. The couple then owned and operated Northland Ballroom until 2005. Darryl enjoyed spending time with his family and friends. Darryl, A.K.A. Papa, Uncle Dick and Uncle Fun, welcomed all his nieces, nephews, great nieces and nephews and treated them as his own grandchildren.

Survivors include his wife, Gail of Iola; children, Darryl Jr. of Iola and Deena (Dominic who he loved like a son) Sciortino of Amherst; his only granddaughter Avigail, who was the joy of his life; two brothers, Alfred “Fritz” of Amherst and Daniel (Janice) of Milwaukee; brother in law David “Butch” (Linda) Stoltz of Milwaukee; sisters in law, Lorraine Eagle in Michigan and Barbara Stoltz of Milwaukee. In addition to his parents Darryl was preceded in death by one brother, Frederick; one sister Rose Marie and many other loved ones.

The funeral service will be held at 1:00pm on Saturday, August 19, 2017 at Schmidt & Schulta Funeral Home, Wittenberg. Interment will be in Hillcrest Cemetery, town of Norrie, Marathon County. Lola Jane Curtis

Lola J. Curtis, 94, Shawano, died on Sunday, August 13, 2017 at Shawano Health Services under the care of Heartland Hospice.

The family rejoices at the happy reunion of her and her husband of 74 years, Glenn.
Lola was born on December 31, 1922 in the town of Grant, Shawano County, the daughter of the late John and Laura (Doede) Breitenfeldt. In her younger years, she was a babysitter and did most of the housework for her family. She went to Weasel Dam School and graduated in 1936. She was confirmed at Immanuel Lutheran Church, Morris. She then went to live with her uncle Bill and Aunt Vivian in New London to attend high school. She then came home during the summers where she worked as a home helper and at a restaurant in Wittenberg. Lola also worked as a surgical nurse’s aid in New London and for a short time worked at Edison Furniture Factory.

On August 22, 1942, Lola married Glenn Curtis at Immanuel Lutheran Church, Morris. He preceded her in death on January 18, 2016. The couple enjoyed traveling and flower and vegetable gardening.

Lola is survived by three sons, Allen Curtis of Wausau, Larry Curtis and Jay Curtis both of Tigerton; three grandchildren, Crystal (Todd) Bishop, Douglas Curtis and Greg Curtis and a brother, Sader Breitenfeldt of Tigerton.

Lola was preceded in death by her husband, parents and brothers Hilmer and Gary.
A graveside service will be held at 2PM on Thursday, August 17, 2017 at Union Cemetery in Tigerton. Rev. John Hielsberg will officiate.
