EAGLE RIVER — A 20-year-old man who died in a weekend shooting is Conner Stephens, according to the Vilas County Sheriff’s Department.

Police say Stephens was fatally shot in the chest inside an Eagle River residence by Jeremiah Solis, 19, of Eagle River. Solis is being held in the Vilas County Jail on a preliminary charge of homicide by negligent handling of a dangerous weapon.

Official charges have not yet been filed.

The shooting was reported at 11:42 p.m. at 421 E. Wall Street in Eagle River, police said. When police arrived, they found Stephens bleeding from a gunshot wound to his upper chest area, authorities said. He died at a local hospital.

The events surrounding the shooting remain unclear as of Monday morning. Officers took several people into custody as part of the investigation, which remains active.
