RIB MOUNTAIN — The Big Brothers Big Sisters of Northcentral WI Inc will hold a ribbon cutting ceremony at 11:30 a.m. on Wednesday, October 11 at their new location at 2804 Rib Mountain Drive, Suite G. The ribbon cutting will be followed by an open house.

Big Brothers Big Sister began in 1904 with a New York City court clerk named Ernest Coulter. Coulter saw more and more boys pass through his courtroom and recognized that caring adults could help many of these children stay out of trouble. As Coulter sought out volunteers, the organization had begun.

At about the same time in New York, the members of a group called the Ladies of Charity were befriending girls who had passed through the New York Children’s Court. The group would later become known as the Catholic Big Sisters.

Both groups continued to work independently until 1977, when the Big Brothers Association and Big Sisters International combined to become Big Brothers Big Sisters of America.

Big Brothers Big Sisters of Northcentral WI Inc was incorporated in Wausau on October 12, 1976 and now serves the communities of Wausau, Weston, Schofield, Rothschild, Mosinee, Marathon and Merrill. The organization’s mission is to provide children facing adversity with strong and enduring, professionally supported one-to-one relationships that change their lives for the better, forever.
