WESTON — Outdoor racing isn’t just for adults, and the YMCA has a new event to prove it.

The Woodson YMCA Youth Duathlon combines biking and running in kid-friendly distances. The Sept. 17 event is a fun competition for ages 6 to 18 in a range of age groups, designed to promote healthy living. Entry fees go to support the Woodson YMCA Community Partners campaign.

Melissa Hoffman, health and wellness director at the Woodson YMCA Wausau Branch, said she is spearheading the event as a way to offer area kids a chance to have their very own race. Hoffman is director of the race.

“We feel it is important to get kids excited about exercise and give them something to work towards,” Hoffman said.

There are two courses to choose from. The short course consists of a 1/2-mile run and 2-mile bike ride, while the long course has a 2-mile run and a 4-mile bike ride. All participants receive a finisher medal.
