NEW LONDON — A 62-year-old man is facing multiple counts of attempted homicide after a gun battle that left a Waupaca County Sheriff’s deputy wounded.

Police, including SWAT teams from three counties, went to the New London home of James Dax at around 3 p.m. Friday afternoon to arrest him on charges of aggravated battery of an elderly person. A warrant was issued for Dax’s arrest on Aug. 31, according to online court records.

When officers arrived, Dax allegedly shot at officers, wounding the deputy, before he was arrested.

The deputy is expected to recover. Dax is being held in the Waupaca County Jail and is expected to appear in court on Monday.

Dax in 2013 was convicted of endangering safety by use of a dangerous weapon and resisting an officer, and was ordered not to possess any firearms, court records show. He was also accused in 2011 of animal mistreatment resulting in death, but those charges were eventually dropped as part of a plea agreement.
