Prompted by the recent events in Charlottesville, a group of panelists will hold a town hall meeting Wednesday to discuss hate groups and the potential impact they have on central Wisconsin.

Community After Charlottesville: A Town Hall Meeting will be held from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. Wed., Sept. 13 at the YWCA, 613 Fifth St., Wausau. A panel of local community leaders will share their perspectives and will address public comments and concerns.

This town hall meeting will discuss hate groups operating in our area and will focus on addressing these main points:

  • How prepared are we as a local community to deal with hate groups such as the KKK,
  • White nationalists, white supremacists, and neo-nazis that may decide to demonstrate in our area?
  • Free speech vs. hate speech: When is freedom of speech no longer free speech?
  • Policy perspective: What local policies do we currently have in place that address these concerns?
