WAUSAU — One person is hospitalized and one person is in custody following an early morning stabbing in downtown Wausau, according to police.

Witnesses tell Wausau Pilot and Review the stabbing was a result of a fight that broke out around 1 a.m. outside a Third Street tavern. Patrons and staff were unaware of the fight until multiple squad cars arrived on scene, witnesses said.

When police arrived, they found the victim with two stab wounds to the upper chest. He was transported to a local hospital for treatment. The extent of his injuries and his current condition were not specified.

The suspect fled the scene but was apprehended a short time later, police said.

Witnesses said the victim and the suspect knew one another.

No names have yet been released, and an investigation is ongoing.
