WAUSAU — The Wausau Police Department has a new tool in its arsenal in fighting downtown crime: surveillance cameras overlooking The 400 Block.

City leaders in August 2016 approved a $30,000 request to install the cameras. The request came at a time when police and city leaders were grappling with problem drinking and other troublesome behavior at the downtown park.

The cameras, installed Wednesday, will be operational 24 hours a day and will be monitored by the Wausau Police Department.
