WAUSAU — Members of the Southeast Side Neighborhood group will host the second annual Run the Runway 5K event this weekend to support revitalization efforts for Alexander Airport Park.

The event begins at 2 p.m. Saturday with free activities for kids, with the race starting at 3 p.m. The family-friendly course permits strollers and walkers; no pets are allowed.

Registration is $25 for adults and $15 for kids younger than 12. Register online and pick up packets on Friday from 4:30 p.m . to 7 p.m. or on Saturday from 11 a.m. to 2:30 p.m.

The park has undergone a massive renovation this summer that transformed the park into a miniature airport, complete with numbered runways, a shelter mimicking an old fashioned hangar, aviation-themed play equipment and much more.

Nearly all of the $600,000 renovation has been funded through donations from individuals and foundations. All proceeds from Saturday’s run will go toward the park project, which has been a source of pride for neighborhood residents.

The project is also being supported through grants from the Walter Alexander Foundation and the Judd S. Alexander Foundation.
