The Wausau Museum of Contemporary Art (WMOCA), 309 McClellan St., Wausau, will open its doors to the general public for the first time Saturday, October 7 from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. with a special reception.
The opening coincides with the debut of WMOCA’s 2017 National Juried Art Exhibition featuring the talents of 49 contemporary artists from across the U.S. who were selected to exhibit from among 750 entries. The works on display are competing for the $10,000 Best of Show award, which will be announced Saturday evening.
Due to the mature subject matter of this show, parental discretion is advised.
Alyssa Monks, juror for the exhibition and a Master of Contemporary Realism will present the Best of Show award. Ms. Monks sits on the Board of Trustees for the New York Academy of Art and was recently recognized as one of the top 30 most influential female artists of our lifetime. Her works are exhibited and collected internationally.
Admission to WMOCA is free. Beginning Tuesday, October 10, the public may visit Sundays, Tuesdays, Wednesdays or Thursdays from noon until 5 p.m.; Fridays, noon to 8 p.m. and Saturdays from 10 a.m. until 8 p.m.
“The Wausau Museum of Contemporary Art equals a huge step for Wausau’s art community, and the community as a whole,” said founder and executive director David Hummer. “We want this museum to inspire people in our area and throughout the Midwest to understand and appreciate the art of our time.”
The 2017 National Juried Art Exhibition is WMOCA’s first of many shows. The museum has additional exhibitions scheduled through 2018 with nationally known artists including David Shevlino, Samantha French and Jacob Dhein. To learn more, visit www.wmoca.org .
