Police are investigating an assault on a staff member at Lincoln Hills, the state’s juvenile prison for boys, according to the Lincoln County Sheriff’s Department.

Police said the staff member was assaulted by an inmate at the facility, which is a “type 1 secured juvenile correctional facility” operated by the Wisconsin Department of Corrections.

The alleged assault happened on Oct. 11, according to a department news release issued Thursday. The victim was transported via ambulance to an undisclosed hospital for treatment of injuries, the extent of which have not been specified.

No additional details, including the names, ages, or gender of those involved, have been released.

Prior to 1994 the state juvenile institution for girls was located at Lincoln Hills. After June 1, 2011, the students at Ethan Allen and Southern Oaks were consolidated into Lincoln Hills. Girls are held at a separate facility called Copper Lake School, within Lincoln Hills. The prisons share a campus 30 miles north of Wausau.

A federal judge’s order requiring sweeping changes at the facility has been difficult to comply with because of “significant unrest” that at times has endangered staff members, according to court documents filed this week.
