WAUSAU — A 41-year-old Wausau woman is facing felony child abuse charges after three witnesses said she slapped a toddler’s face and dragged the child down a staircase at the Marathon County Courthouse.
A preliminary hearing is set for Nov. 10 to determine whether there is enough evidence for Sheri Thayer to be bound over for trial. Thayer faces charges of child abuse-intentionally causing harm in Marathon County Circuit Court. Thayer, who has no prior criminal record, is free on a $500 signature bond.
According to the criminal complaint, Thayer was accompanied by two young children just after 3 p.m. on Friday, Oct. 6, when she allegedly slapped a 2-year-old child so loudly that the slap drew attention from at least three witnesses, including an attorney. Thayer then allegedly swung the child, who started crying loudly after the slap, by one arm, and dragged her down the staircase.
Police approached Thayer, then called the parents of both children to come to the courthouse and pick them up, according to court documents. All three witnesses gave statements, and charges were filed on Monday, Oct. 9.
If she is convicted, Thayer faces up to 6 years in prison and a maximum $25,000 fine.
