Officials have identified the man who was killed following a traffic stop late Sunday in the city of Crandon as 30-year-old Dexter David Anthony Baxter.
According to the Wisconsin Department of Justice Division of Criminal Investigation (DCI), a traffic stop conducted by a Crandon police officer led to a physical altercation between the officer and Baxter, who police describe as a passenger of the vehicle.
The altercation resulted in the officer firing his duty weapon, police said. The officer on the scene, whose name has not been released, rendered first-aid to Baxter until EMS arrived.
Baxter was pronounced dead before arriving at a local hospital, according to a DOJ release. An autopsy was conducted at the University of Wisconsin on Monday.
Online court records show Baxter has a criminal record dating back to 2004, including convictions for second degree sexual assault of a child, armed robbery, and resisting an officer, among other charges. A bench warrant was issued in February for Baxter after he failed to appear for a hearing in a Brown County case.
The involved officer sustained non-life-threatening injuries during the altercation and was transported to a nearby hospital for treatment. He has been placed on paid administrative leave, pending the outcome of this investigation. Such actions are considered protocol during any officer-involved shooting in Wisconsin.
DCI is continuing to collect evidence and determine the facts of this incident and will turn over investigative reports to the Forest County District Attorney when the investigation concludes.
