The bodies found this week inside a western Wisconsin home belonged to a man and his infant daughter, police confirmed Thursday.

The deaths happened Tuesday in Baldwin, a small community just northeast of River Falls.

Baldwin Police Chief Darren Krueger said a woman arrived around 4:30 p.m. Oct. 31 at her home at 280 Cedar St. Apt. 54 to find 39-year-old Jeffrey Long dead and her 14-week-old daughter Aubree Long unresponsive. Jeffrey Long was Aubree Long’s father.

Jeffrey Long died of a gunshot wound to the head, according to police. Efforts to resuscitate the child were unsuccessful.

A preliminary autopsy by the Ramsey County Medical Examiner’s Office did not reveal a cause or manner of death for the baby girl, according to a story in the River Falls Journal. Toxicology and microscopic testing results are pending.

An initial report of a gun wound to the child later proved inaccurate; no internal or external trauma was found on the baby, according to police.

Jeffrey Long’s death is being treated as a suicide.

Investigation continues into the case, including Jeffrey Long’s activities on Oct. 31. Krueger said officers have yet to determine the events leading up to the deaths.

Neighbors interviewed by police didn’t report anything out of the ordinary that day, according to the River Falls Journal.
