MARATHON COUNTY — One person is dead after a single vehicle crash Wednesday, according to the Marathon County Sheriff’s Department

The crash was reported at 7:39 p.m. and happened on Hwy. 29 at Hwy. 97. When first responders arrived, they found a single vehicle with a lone occupant had driven off Hwy. 97 in a southbound direction, then proceeded through the gore area, over the westbound lane on Hwy. 29, police said. The vehicle came to rest in the median of Hwy. 29 and started on fire.

The driver of the vehicle was pronounced dead at the scene by the Marathon County Medical Examiner.

Additional information, including the name of the driver, is expected to be released later this evening or early Friday, police said.
