WAUSAU — A suspected drunk driver behind the wheel of a badly damaged vehicle was arrested early Saturday after leaving the scene of a crash.

The driver, who was uninsured and “heavily intoxicated,” chose not to stop after the crash because the driver “wanted some breakfast” after a night of drinking, police said.

The driver was pulled over at about 2 a.m. in downtown Wausau and was arrested on drunken driving charges. Police say the driver was covered in glass, driving with the aid of a hole in the windshield. The car had been damaged in a crash minutes earlier on Hwy. 51 near Hwy. 52 Parkway, according to the Wausau Police Department.

“We cannot say this enough,” Wausau Police wrote on the department’s Facebook page. “If you are drinking alcohol, find a safe ride home. There is nothing worth what you risk. This driver lost their car, went to jail, and faces multiple financial consequences.”

Thankfully, the driver and passenger were not injured. The driver’s name was not immediately released.
