WESTON — Weston’s village board has opted out of Marathon County’s plan to implement uniform addressing.
Board members voted 4 – 3 Monday night in favor of having village staff handle incorrect addressing through code enforcement and other methods.
Village administrator Daniel Guild says his staff will be spending the next few weeks putting together a plan to handle those changes.
“We know that there can be work done here in the village to improve addressing in general, and that’s where we’ll be focusing our efforts,” Guild said.
Initial surveys by village staff showed that roughly a third of the village’s residential properties are out of compliance when it comes to properly displaying their address. That includes improper signage, writing out numbers, or having their address displayed on a block or marker outside in the lawn.
Weston had previously been the only major municipality in the county to be on board with the county’s addressing plan. Rib Mountain town officials are continuing their fight to opt out of the program, despite being an unincorporated municipality.
