WAUSAU — The Wausau East Lumberjacks defeated the Newman Cardinals in a 84-65 victory during Friday’s Turkey Shoot at Wausau West High School.

East’s Trey Buchberger scored 24 points in the game, while Newman turned the ball over 13 times in the first half alone, allowing East to convert into 14 fast break points.

“Our inexperience showed tonight,” said Newman Catholic Head Coach Dan Garrett. “We did a better job in the second half taking care of the ball with only 6 but the first half turnovers proved to be too much to overcome”

Despite the turnovers, Garrett said he was happy with his team’s effort and the way they shared the ball on offense. Specifically, Garrett pointed to the play of freshman Charlie Mcarthy, who in his first game scored 10 points and had 8 rebounds.

“For a freshman playing his first high school game I was pleased,” Garrett said. “Ben Leischer also did a great job for us scoring 12 of his 15 points in the second half.”

Newman takes on West at 7 p.m. in the final game of the Turkey Shoot.
