WAUSAU — A 36-year-old Wausau man who police say crashed into a parked vehicle early Sunday is being held on felony drunken driving and obstruction charges.

Wausau police responded just after 3 a.m. Sunday to the 800 block of S. Third Avenue for a report of the crash, according to the police report.

Lester Ray Jones Jr. initially told police he was “on the passenger side” of the vehicle when it crashed, despite two witnesses who allegedly saw Jones driving. “My buddy jumped out running,” Jones told police, according to the criminal complaint.

When police tried to arrest Jones, he tried to run away but was nabbed by an officer before he could escape, according to the incident report.

Jones faces charges of fifth offense drunken driving and obstruction. He appeared today in Marathon County Circuit Court, where a judge ordered him held on a $5,000 cash bond. A review hearing is set for Friday.

Jones was last convicted in September 2012 of felony OWI charges and sentenced to 18 months behind bars followed by three years of probation, according to court records.
