The Alexander Walkway in the Upper Third Street neighborhood has a new glow to it thanks to some innovative and caring citizens in the area.

Gisy Marks, owner of the Glass Hat bar, and others wanted to continue the momentum created with Art Lives Here, the street art contest that put over a dozen murals up in the area this past September. Christmas Lives Here was born from that desire.

Blake Opal-Wahoske, a local resident, thinks this is a great idea to bring neighbors together for the holidays.

“Christmas Live Here brings neighbors together in this up-and-coming neighborhood of Upper Third Street. We are proud to call this area home and hope that this project literally lights the way for future development in the neighborhood,” he said.

Through Dec. 25, community members are invited to contribute a tree to the walkway. Currently, 14 trees are up. Anyone looking to add a tree is responsible for supplying the tree, staking materials, and decorations.

Organizers have tips on procuring and putting up the trees:

  • Tree stands and stakes are required.
  • Stands should be weighted to avoid trees tipping.
  • Trees should be unlit.
  • There are LOTS of cheap and easy tree decoration ideas (please note that all ornaments or decorations must be securely fastened to the tree):
    • Christmas sock tree
    • Mitten tree
    • Small doll tree
    • Toy tree
    • Pipe cleaner tree (they just twist on)
    • Twisted pretzel tree (string pretzels and hang on tree)
    • Silk flowers tree
  • Disclaimer: Organizers are not responsible for lost or stolen property.

Residents looking for inexpensive Christmas trees to add to the project can find less-than-perfect trees on the “burn pile” at Newby’s. Please contact organizers if you need assistance getting a tree.

The event aims to bring Christmas down Third Street and encourage pride in the upper Third Street neighborhood.
