WAUSAU — Police say a body found Friday outside Wausau’s Alternative High School was that of an 85-year-old man with dementia.

According to the Wausau Police Department, officers were called  at 9:20 a.m. on Friday for a report of a body that was discovered outside a door not commonly used at the school.

The school is located on the Northcentral Technical College Campus on Wausu’s northwest side. Classes at the school were cancelled for the day following the discovery, school officials said.

Investigators learned the man lived independently with his wife near the school. Video surveillance footage showed the man arrived Thursday night around midnight and repeatedly tried to enter the building. The man’s wife thought her husband had gone to bed and did not realize he had left their home, police said.

This investigation continues, but no foul (play) is suspected,” the Wausau Police Department posted on their public Facebook page. “Our condolences to this man’s family for their loss. We continue to mindful of the vulnerable elderly among us in our community.”

The man’s name was not immediately released.
