WAUSAU — Police say a suspected drunk driver who was clocked driving 52 mph in a 35 mph zone drove up onto a curb and down a sidewalk before abandoning his vehicle and fleeing on foot through a Rothschild neighborhood.
A Rothschild Police officer was monitoring speeds at 10:15 p.m. on Dec. 6 along Bus. Hwy. 51 when he saw a vehicle speeding down the roadway. The officer used a radar gun to clock the speed of the driver, later identified as 33-year-old Jerome Brisby of Rothschild, at 52 mph, according to the police report. The officer then followed Brisby, who turned onto Weston Avenue, and watched as Brisby jumped a curb, drove along the sidewalk, drove back onto the road, and speed away, according to the report.
Brisby abandoned the vehicle in a parking lot at 202 First Street, then ran through an apartment building and out the other side, police said.
Rothschild Police were joined by officers from the Everest Metro Police Department to scour the area and eventually arrested Brisby, whose preliminary breath test results show he had a blood alcohol concentration of 0.24 percent, three times the legal limit for driving in Wisconsin.
Brisby appeared Dec. 7 in Marathon County Circuit Court, where he was charged with fourth offense drunken driving, resisting an officer and bail jumping. He was released on a $5,000 signature bond and is due in court for a review hearing on Wednesday.
Blood test results are pending.
