Mosinee School Board votes to keep Indians mascot

MOSINEE — Members of the Mosinee School Board this week voted against a proposal to change the school’s mascot.

The current mascot is the Indian, though the district phased out the word in recent years and now use a block ‘M’ for a logo.

Students first came forward in November requesting a change, saying they were looking for a less controversial way to identify the school. Members of the school board in November asked the students to form a mascot committee and provide student input before making a decision.

Student Senate President Lauren Kaiser spoke to the board Tuesday, presenting a survey of more than 1,400 people that overwhelmingly showed support for a mascot change.

But the school board voted down the proposal on Tuesday by a vote of 5-3. Matthew Barnes, Michael Kaiser and Kevin Thiel were the three board members who voted in support of the change.
