TOWN OF PINE RIVER — A passenger in a vehicle that slowed for emergency workers was rear ended Thursday, injuring the woman and trapping the driver as crews were tending to a rollover victim, according to the Lincoln County Sheriff’s Department.
The crash is a good reminder to slow down and give rescue crews plenty of room to operate, according to the Pine River Fire Department.
The crash happened late Thursday afternoon on Hwy. 51 south of Hwy 64, when a 21-year-old Tomahawk man lost control of his vehicle and flipped. As a deputy investigated the crash, the Pine River Fire Department set up flares and cones, closing one lane of traffic, when a vehicle driven by a 78-year-old Conover man rear ended a Jeep at a high rate of speed, police said. A deputy narrowly missed being struck as the Jeep careened into the ditch.
The driver of the Jeep, a 20-year-old Schofield man, was trapped and had to be extricated from the vehicle. His 21-year-old passenger was injured, and was transferred to Ascension Good Samaritan Hospital for treatment of injuries that were not life-threatening, police said.
Police say the Conover man will be cited, but have not specified which citations he will receive.
The 21-year-old driver who initially crashed refused medical transport, police said.
