RHINELANDER — A 44-year-old man accused of accessing child pornography through an internet chatroom is due in court today.
Two felony charges of possessing child pornography were filed Dec. 6 in Oneida County Circuit Court against Danial G. Smith. The charges are the result of an investigation by the Department of Justice.
When investigators, acting on a tip, searched Smith’s home, they discovered hundreds of images depicting child pornography, according to the criminal complaint.
Smith, who is not currently in custody, is set to appear at 1:30 p.m. for an initial appearance on the charges, each of which carry a maximum penalty of 25 years in prison upon conviction.
Smith has no prior criminal convictions in Wisconsin, according to a search of online court records.
