PRICE COUNTY — The bodies of two snowmobilers were discovered early Sunday, two hours after they were reported missing, police said.

The bodies were found at about 1:45 a.m. near the end of Long Lake in the town of Elk, according to a Price County Sheriff’s Department news release.

Police say the snowmobilers had left a property in the town of Elk and had not arrived at their destination in the city of Phillips. The Price County Sheriff’s Office, Phillips Police Department, Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources, Ashland County Sheriff’s Office, Central Price County Ambulance Service, and Phillips Fire Department assisted with the search.

An initial investigation suggests the snowmobile crashed into the shoreline. A 33-year-old man driving the snowmobile was pronounced dead at the scene, as was a 37-year-old man riding on the back, police said.

The names of the victims have not yet been released. The crash remains under investigation.
