WAUSAU — Trails at Nine Mile Forest Recreational Area will be open for Nordic skiing and snowshoeing starting Tuesday, Jan. 16, according to the Marathon County Parks Department.

Nine Mile, at 8704 Red Bud Road, features double tracked trails with a skating lane. The ski chalet has a changing area, restrooms, and a spacious warming area with a wood stove. Nearly 4 miles of trails are lighted nightly until 9 p.m. during the ski season.

The trails, ranging from beginner to expert, are signed and mapped. Rental equipment is available and annual passes are offered. Snowshoeing is allowed on the cross country trails, which does require a pass. A 4-mile snowshoe trail is also available.

The chalet is open Monday through Friday from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m., Saturdays from 8 a.m. to 9 p.m., and Sundays from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.
