Despite a slight halftime lead, the Newman Cardinals boys basketball team on Friday dropped a game to Phillips by a score of 74-54.

Newman was down early by 14 points, battling back to take a 34-32 halftime lead. But Phillips came back strong in the second half, getting the ball inside and taking advantage of second chance opportunities off missed shots.

Newman Head Coach Dan Garrett said despite his team’s second half struggles, he is happy with his team’s effort.

“Ben Leischer had a great game for us scoring 21 points, I’m really happy with how he has been playing for us,” Garrett said. “Freshman Charlie McCarty had a good game with 10 points and 7 rebounds. As a freshman, he is really starting to figure things out and it’s been great to see his development.”
