WAUSAU, Wis. – Heavy snow and colder conditions mean snowmobile trails are finally opening in Marathon County.

County parks officials will be opening up trails in zones 2, 4 and 5 starting  at 8 a.m. on Saturday, Jan. 27. Those trails cover the northwest, northeast and southwest sections of the county, and are currently in fair to excellent condition.

Trails in zones 1 and 3 are still closed. Those are trails to the east and south of the Wausau metro.

Marathon County Motorized Recreation Administrator Jon Daniels reminds riders to keep themselves safe on the trails, because trails through open fields and other windswept areas might still have rough snow cover.

For more info on the trails in Marathon County, call the 24-hour snow and trail condition hotline at 1-888-575-7669 or check the website at www.co.marathon.wi.us/parks.asp.
