WAUSAU, Wis. – The remainder of Marathon County’s snowmobile trails are set to open Tuesday morning, giving riders free rein throughout the county’s extensive trail system.

Zones 1 and 3 are set to open at 8 a.m. on Tuesday, according to the Marathon County Parks Department. The rest of the county’s trails opened up in January.

Marathon County Motorized Recreation Administrator Jon Daniels says trails are currently in fair to excellent condition, but that riders need to use caution because there are reports of icy areas hidden by the fresh snow which significantly increases stopping distances.

Daniels also reminds riders to check the county’s trails website before every ride to see which trails are currently closed, and that 55 MPH is the night time speed limit for snowmobiles everywhere in Wisconsin.
