Leona Zell

Leona C. “Sissy” Masgay Zell, 97, passed away on Tuesday, February 6, 2018 at Aspirus Wausau Hospital, with her loving family by her side; celebrating her birthday in Heaven.

She was one of nine children born to the late John and Martha (Gorski) Gorecki. She was born in the Town of Weston on February 6, 1921. Leona married Joseph Masgay on February 8, 1941. He preceded her in death in 1976. She later found love again, and married Alex Zell on December 30, 1981. He preceded her in death in 1984.

Leona began her career at First American Bank as an elevator operator, and then worked in various positions, ending her career in 1981 while in the book keeping department of M&I Bank. She was a member of St Mark Ladies Council, where she was active for many years and would accompany Sister Elizabeth Oliver on home visits, giving communion to those who were home bound. She was also a member of the Secular Order of St. Francis, where she attended meetings with Alex and Sister Elizabeth. In her early years, Sissy & Joe owned a rooming house on First Street in Wausau. They loved spending time at their cottage on Manson Lake fishing and partying with their friends.

She enjoyed quilting, embroidering and crocheting. But most important to Sissy were her friends and family and she will be missed by all who knew and loved her.

Beside her two husbands and parents, Sissy was preceded in death by her two brothers, Frank and Leonard Gorecki and her six sisters, Genevieve Green, Angeline Sickler, Eleanor Gauerke, Winifred Radandt, Grace Omernick and Jeanette Staszak.

Sissy is survived by her step-children John (Betty) Zell and Patricia (William) Puskarich; step-grandchildren, Michael (Marin) Puskarich, Andrew Puskarich, Kristy (Josh) Scott and Becky Zell and six great grandchildren. She is also loved and survived by many nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, February 10, 2018 at St. Mark Catholic Parish, 602 Military Road, Rothschild. The Reverend Allan Slowiak will officiate. Visitation will take place from 9:30 a.m. until the time of services at the church. Burial will take place at Restlawn Memorial Park on Monday, February 12, 2018.

The family wishes to thank Terri and Rita for taking care of Aunt Sissy these past years, as well as her friends and the staff at Renaissance Assisted Living who became her family and friends over the last 3 years. A special thank you to Aspirus Palliative Care for their dedication and compassion in her final days.

Ella M. Traska

Ella 97, of Weston, passed away on Tuesday, February 6, 2018 at Rennes LTC in Weston.

Ella was born in Wausau on October 23, 1920 to the late Stephen and Rose Palesch. She married Edward Traska in Wausau on August 25, 1945. After 63 years of marriage, Edward preceded Ella in death on April 24, 2009.

Ella worked at Marathon Electric during WW II. She also worked retail sales at Winkelman’s, the Fair Store, and was a department manager at Johnson Hills until her retirement in 1977. Ella’s passion for flower gardening was evident at their home on E. Wausau Ave. She took great pride in designing and planting her many flower beds. One of her greatest joys was being awarded “Garden of the Month”. Ella loved to cook for her family gatherings. Baking was her specialty. She loved trying new recipes and would submit them to the Wausau Herald for publication.

She is survived by her daughters, Donna (Jim) Schroeder of Madison and Debbie Bacon of San Antonio, Texas; 2 grandsons, Jon (Tamara) Melone and their children Dominic, Mario, and Giuliette of Cottage Grove and Tony (Rachel) Melone of Janesville; five step grandchildren and nine great -step grandchildren.

Funeral services will be held on Friday, February 9, 2018 at 11:30 a.m. at Brainard Funeral Home – Wausau Chapel, 522 Adams Street, Wausau. The Reverend James Schaefer will officiate. A visitation will be held from 10:30 a.m. until the time of service at the funeral home. Entombment will take place at Restlawn Memorial Park.


Mary Kay Kucirek

Mary Kay Gritzmacher Kucirek, 83, passed to eternal life on February 2, 2018.

She was born in Green Bay, WI and was adopted by her loving parents, Franklin and Marge Gritzmacher of Wausau. She attended St. James Grade School and Wausau Jr. High School, and graduated from Wausau Sr. High School in 1952. Mary Kay attended Stephens College in Columbia, MO, where she sang in the choir and belonged to Zeta Phi Delta sorority, acting as president her senior year. She worked for Braniff Airlines at Midway Airport in Chicago after college, where she took care of many celebrities like Bob Hope, Harry Truman, and Marilyn Monroe.

She married her high school sweetheart, Joe, on August 18, 1956 at St. James Catholic Church, after which he was commissioned as staff judge advocate in the Air Force. They were stationed in Sault Ste. Marie, MI. They returned to Wausau to raise their family.

Mary Kay was active at St. James (Resurrection) Parish, serving as an Extraordinary Eucharistic minister, catechist, organizer of the Jamestown Bazaar fundraiser for many years, and Girl Scout and Cub Scout troop leader. She was a member of Martha’s Helpers who cleaned the church, and volunteered in the parish Soup Kitchen for many years. She was a member of the parish Catholic Women’s Club and served as President. She was also active in the deanery and diocesan Catholic Women’s Clubs, and attended several national conventions. She was a library aide at St. James Grade School.

Mary Kay was active in the Birch Trails Girl Scout Council, including organizing council wide trips for the scouts. She also volunteered at the YWCA and served as President. She was a volunteer for many years at the Aspirus Hospital gift shop. Mary Kay was also active in the Jaycettes, serving one year as President.

Mary Kay enjoyed music, playing bridge with her bridge club (now the Lunch Bunch), reading, traveling, and backing the Packers, Brewers, and Badgers. She was a big fan of Mike Leckrone and the UW Marching Band. She was skilled at many crafts such as crochet, needlepoint, cross stitch, Ukrainian egg decorating, decoupage, quilling, knitting, and making various types of dolls.

She is survived by her children Peg (Randy), Joe (Lori), John (Tammy), Virginia (Tom), and Mary (Paul); grandchildren Noelle, Jenny, Samantha, Kory, Andrew, Jenna, and Timothy; step grandchildren Jessica and Tristin; great grandchildren Kaylie, Madisyn, Ella, Levi, Hunter, Aslyn, Violet, and Maddie; brother-in-law Bob (Angie); sister-in-law Jeannie, nephew Scott and niece Krystyna. She is further survived by her birth family siblings Norbert (Joyce), Robert (Theresa), John (Louise), Louis (Joanne), Mary, and Dorothy (Clarence).

Mary Kay was preceded in death by her parents, beloved Uncle Elmer, brother-in-law Donald, birth family siblings William and Marge, and many aunts, uncles, and cousins.

Mass of Christian Burial will be held Saturday, February 10, 2018 at 11:00 a.m. at the Church of the Resurrection Catholic Parish, Wausau, with burial to follow at St. Joseph’s Cemetery. Fr. Robert Streveler will officiate. Visitation will be held from 5:00 – 7:00 p.m. on Friday, February 9, 2018 at Brainard Funeral Home, 522 Adams Street, Wausau, and again from 9:30 a.m. until the time of service at the church. Parish Rosary will be held at 6:30 p.m., Friday, at the funeral home.

In lieu of flowers, Mary Kay asked that donations be given to the Marathon County Humane Society.


Joyce Wiederhoeft

Joyce Wiederhoeft, 80, of Wausau passed away on Wednesday, February 7, 2018 at Aspirus Hospice House.

She was born May 27, 1937 in Ringle to the late Frank and Pauline (Steinbach) Bauer. On July 25, 1959, Joyce married Walter “Junior” Wiederhoeft at Trinity Lutheran Church, Wausau. Joyce worked as a Dental Assistant until her retirement. In her younger years, she enjoyed flower gardening and antiquing. Joyce and Walt loved spending as much time as they could at their trailer in Lake Tomahawk visiting with friends and relaxing around the campfire.

Survivors include two daughters, Lonnie (William) Wiederhoeft of Eau Claire and her children, Tara (Jared), Justin (Natalie) and Nathan (Maegan), Deborah Wiederhoeft of Schofield and her children, Haley and Paige, six great grandchildren and her sister-in-law, Beverly (Roger) Goetsch of Wausau. Joyce was preceded in death by her husband, Walt, three sisters and four brothers.

Funeral services will be 11:00 a.m., Saturday, February 10, 2018 at Trinity Lutheran Church, 501 Stewart Ave., Wausau. Reverend Zach Holdorf will officiate. Entombment will be in Memorial Chapel Mausoleum at Restlawn Memorial Park. Visitation will be at the church on Saturday from 9:30 a.m. until the time of services. June E. (Marquardt) Krenz

June E. Krenz, 84, Wausau, died early Monday, February 5, 2018 at Rennes Health and Rehab Center, Weston.

June was born September 7, 1933 on the family farm in the Town of Easton to the late Reinhard and Elsa (Stoeber) Marquardt. She is a 1951 graduate of Wausau High School. On June 20, 1953, June married the love of her life, Harold Krenz, at St. Stephen Lutheran Church, Wausau. The couple was blessed with two children: Susan and Ronald. June worked in the factory for Wisconsin Box Company for 25 years before retiring and helping Harold with the ginseng and buffalo farming. After 62 wonderful years together, Harold died on April 15, 2016.

June was a loving wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother. She had a very traditional sense of family and enjoyed activities like camping, fishing with her grandchildren, gardening, canning and baking for friends and family. Over the past few years, June liked living at Renaissance Assisted Living and making new friends,

June is survived by her loving children, Susan Krenz of Neenah and Ron (Jodi) Krenz of Wausau; grandchildren, Michael Bartelme of Menasha, Jeremy (Katrina Nelson) Krenz and Shane (Kelsey Raduechel) Krenz both of Wausau; great-grandchildren, Quinn and Karlee Krenz; nieces, Diane Vlietstra and Karen (William) Schult. She is preceded in death by her brother and sister-in-law, Raymond and Dorothy Marquardt.

The funeral service for June will be at 11:00 AM on Thursday, February, 8, 2018 at St. Stephen Lutheran Church, Wausau. Pastor Jennifer Dahle will officiate. Visitation will be from 9:30 AM until the time of service at the church on Thursday. Burial will be at Pine Grove Cemetery. John “Jack” Schlaefer

John C. “Jack” Schlaefer, went to be with his Lord and Savior on Wednesday, February 7, 2018, surrounded by his family at home after a long illness.

He was born on September 14, 1941, in Wausau, the son of John B. and Helen A. Schlaefer.

He and Sandy Markotic were married December 13, 1997, in Three Lakes where they lived for 20 years, she survives. They recently moved back to Wausau to be closer to family.

He raised five children with Joanne Schlaefer, she survives. Also surviving are his children and grandchildren. Susan (Todd) Fischer, Wausau, and their children Erin, T. Benjamin, Amanda, Johanna; MaryJo (Jeff) Johnson, Wausau, and her children Samantha, Chayden; Diane (Jeff) Johnson, Cuenca, Ecuador; John D. Schlaefer, Knowlton, and his children Jacob, John Ethan: Greg (Tonya) Schlaefer, Maple Grove, MN, and their children Megan, Caraline, Joey, Isabel. He is also survived by one sister Karen Mielke, Wausau.

He was preceded in death by his parents and one brother, James “Jim” Schlaefer.

Jack enjoyed life—meeting new people and having conversations along the way! Some of his favorite activities throughout his life were curling, hunting, fishing, snowmobiling, traveling, and cheering on the Green Bay Packers. In recent years most important to Jack was attending his grandchildren’s activities and supporting them as a proud Papa Jack could!

He was a retired partner of Wipfli Ullrich Bertelson LLP. Throughout his life he was involved in many community activities, which stemmed from his belief that Central and Northern Wisconsin were great places to live, including the Data Processing Management Association, the Rothschild-Weston-Schofield Ducks Unlimited, Wausau Area Catholic Schools, and the Wausau Curling Club. In his retirement he continued to serve his community on the board of the Edith Reiter Senior Center serving many years as President, treasurer of the Christian Food Pantry and an active member of the Lions Club in Three Lakes, WI.

In retirement he also enjoyed the time he was able to spend on mission trips in New Orleans and St. Lucia.

Jack’s Celebration of Life will be at the Bible Truth Chapel, 1600 N. 1st Ave., Wausau, on Sunday, Feb. 18, 2018, at 3:00 p.m. with Pastor Dave officiating. Private burial will be at Restlawn Memorial Park Cemetery, Wausau. Visitation will be at the chapel from 1:00 p.m. until the time of the service.

In lieu of flowers memorials may be given to the Reiter Senior Center in Three Lakes.

Phillips Ketchum

Phillips Ketchum, Jr. of Kronenwetter Wisconsin passed away on February 7, 2018 at Cedar Creek Manor at the age of 87. He was born to the late Phillips Ketchum, Sr. and Margery (Amory) in Massachusetts in 1930. He served in the United States Army and graduated from Harvard University as a Physicist. His passion was sailing the Caribbean, East Coast, Bahamas and Virgin Islands. He was an advocate for NAMI (National Alliance on Mental Illness), the nation’s largest grassroots mental health organization dedicated to building better lives for the millions of Americans affected by mental illness.

He is survived by his son Dennis (Dana) Ketchum, two grandchildren, Delaney and Amory Ketchum, and one sister Rebekah Richardson.

He is preceded in death by his parents and one brother Jonathan Ketchum.Family will have a private service at a later date.

Dorothy A Kiddoo

Dorothy “Dot” Ann Kiddoo (Briggs), age 84 passed away on February 7th, 2018 at the House of Dove in Marshfield, Wi.

Dorothy was born March 31, 1933 in Thorp Wisconsin to Raymond and Hannah Briggs.  Dorothy moved with her family and resided in Hayward until her senior year of high school.  Dorothy graduated from Marshfield Senior High in 1951.  In 1959, Dorothy was united in marriage to the love of her life, Clyde Kiddoo in Marshfield.  Clyde and Dorothy celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary in 2009. Dorothy worked for Weinbrenner Shoes, cared for many kids in her home, Karau’s IGA and her final retirement career at Figis.

Dorothy is survived by her children, Kevin Kiddoo of Madison, Jane Kiddoo of Willis, Texas ,  Dr Sandra Kiddoo of Marshfield; her grandchildren Rheannon Kiddoo of Madison, Austin (Amanda) Kiddoo of Madison, Josh Becker of Marshfield, Leanna Becker of Stevens Point, Jeremy Becker of Marshfield, Mikaela Schmit of Marshfield, and Vanessa Schmit of Marshfield; her great grandson Logan Kiddoo, Sister Vieva Henkel and Brothers Larry Briggs and Bob Briggs.  Dorothy is predeceased in death by her parents, husband Clyde, great grandson Aaron, sisters Bernice, Rae, Pearl and Birdena and brothers William, Harvey and Sonny.

A memorial service and celebration of life will be held for Dorothy on Saturday February 10th at 11:30 am at St Paul’s Church of Christ, 1310 E Eighth, Marshfield, WI with Pastor Patti Steevens officiating.  Visitation will be from 9 am until the service.

Dorothy loved to spend time with her family.  Dorothy was an amazing cook, loved to bake and try new recipes.  Dorothy dedicated her life to helping others. Dorothy was an active member of St Paul’s United Church of Christ and the VFW.

Nancy A Rustad

Nancy A. Rustad passed away peacefully on February 4, 2018 at her home in Wisconsin Rapids surrounded by her loving family. She was born on October 31, 1931 to the late Fredrick and Christine (Hanson) Riedel. On April 18, 1952 in Tomah, WI she married Keith M. Rustad whom she would spend the next 56 years with until his passing on September 17, 2007. Along with raising six children, Nancy also was employed as a cook at a well-known supper club and was loved by all her co-works. She was like a mother to many. Nancy was an avid reader and could not wait to find out “Who Done It” at the end of her mystery novels. Along with reading Nancy’s main passions were music, dancing and writing poetry.  She even had some of her works published.

She is survived by her six children, Christine Rustad, Wis. Rapids, Mark Rustad, Nekoosa, Ann (Dale) Young, Wis. Rapids, Lisa (Johnny) Garza, Wis. Rapids, Pamela Klumb (special friend Joe Clapham), Wis. Rapids and Amy (Todd) Ross, Menomonie. She is also survived by nine grandchildren, many great-grandchildren and her long time dear friend Charlotte Carlson.

She is preceded in death by her husband Keith, her parents Fredrick and Christine, 4 brothers and 4 sisters.

A Celebration of Life will be held on Friday, February 9, 2018 at JOHN J. BUETTGEN FUNERAL HOME  631 East Grand Ave. Visitation will be 10:00 am until time of service at 11:00.


Sandra L Szymanski

Sandra Lynn Szymanski (Juhlke), 71, of Schofield, passed away on February 4, 2018 in Wausau, Wisconsin.

Sandra was born on November 28, 1946 in Wausau, Wisconsin, and is the beloved daughter of Lloyd and Dorothy (Woller) Juhlke, and mother to Brad (Danille) Hildebrandt, New Richmond, and Amy (Zhirik) Barseghian, Ladera Ranch, California. On March 16, 1989, she married Wayne Szymanski in a beach wedding in Daytona Beach. Wayne and Sandra enjoyed 20 years together dancing, loving music, traveling, and gathering with friends and family. They were very active in Marathon Fun Days as well before Wayne passed away.  Sandra thoroughly enjoyed her work at Marshfield Clinic for over 30 years. Sandra’s innate love for caring for others and making them happy brought her much happiness both in work and her personal life. More than anything, Sandra enjoyed spending time with her children and grandchildren. She was always willing to travel to watch her grandchildren in their school and sports activities.  Throughout the last decade, Sandra nurtured a passion for traveling and discovering new experiences in life. She traveled frequently with friends, enjoying cruises and international travel. Sandra thrived during her trips to California, Alaska, Europe, and the Panama Canal, and had travel plans into the next few years. Regardless of where she visited, Sandra’s home roots remained strong, she found fulfillment offering help and comfort for anyone that needed her.

Survivors include her son, Brad (Danille) Hildebrandt, New Richmond, her daughter, Amy (Zhirik) Barseghian, Ladera Ranch, California, and her step son, Clint Szymanski. Sandra is also survived by her grandchildren, Lauren and Derek Hildebrandt and Calvin and Ava Barseghian, her father, Lloyd Juhlke, Schofield, her sisters, Nancy Juhlke, Schofield, Bonnie Hart, Maryland, and Karen Hubbard, Arizona. Sandra is further survived by her nephews, Jeff Lowther and Scott and Mark Hubbard.

Sandra was preceded in death by her husband, Wayne Szymanski, her mother, Dorothy Juhlke, her grandson, Jaxon Barseghian, Uncle and Aunt, Edward and Margaret Riedl, and her father and mother-in-law, Alex and Theresa Szymanski.

Visitation will be from 9 to 11 on Saturday, February 10, 2018 at Mount Olive Lutheran Church in Schofield, Wisconsin. Service will follow. A private family committal will be held at St. Mary’s Catholic Cemetery in Marathon, Wisconsin on Monday, February 12, 2018.

Robert V Grata

Robert “Bob” Valentine Grata, 71, Granton, passed away Saturday, February 3, 2018, at his home on Maple Street.  Bob Grata was born December 21, 1946, in Chicago, Il. the son of Walter and Evelyn (Stanczyk) Grata.  Bob began his professional career as an electrician working on the skyscrapers of Chicago.  In 1980 Bob and his family moved from Chicago, Il. to Granton, Wisconsin where he began his career as the bus technician at the Granton Area School District. In 2008, Bob retired after 27 years of dedicated service. Bob’s greatest love in life was his family and he often said, “It’s all about family”.  Bob enjoyed collecting blue M&M collectables and was an avid gamer on the Xbox 360.

He is survived by his four children Rick, Jennifer, Tracy (Erik) and Susan (Dean); his eleven grandchildren Mason, Sheleah, Mack, Savannah, Aiden, Greta, Skylar, Brady, Pierce, Sophia, Dane, loving ex-wife Pearl and brother Les.

A memorial graveside service for Bob will be held at the Windfall Cemetery in Granton, WI on  March 30, 2018 at 4pm.


Edna Marie Zwirschitz

Edna M. Zwirschitz, 96, formerly of Mattoon, died on Tuesday, February 06, 2018 at the Homme Home of Wittenberg under the care of AseraCare Hospice.

She was born on March 12, 1921 in the town of Aniwa, the daughter of the late John and Barbara (Fischer) Beck.

On January 25, 1941, Edna was united in marriage to Joseph Zwirschitz in Phlox. He preceded her in death on January 6, 1986.

Edna was a homemaker and also was site manager for the Shawano County meal site in Mattoon. She also worked for the Mattoon Post Office. Edna was very creative and was an excellent seamstress. She was a faithful member of St. Joseph Holy Family Catholic Church, Phlox being very active in the St. Monica’s Society and also taught religious education. Edna was also a proud member of the American Legion Auxiliary. She was an avid Green Bay Packers Fan and attended the Ice Bowl and had season tickets starting at City Stadium. Family was very important to Edna, and she especially enjoyed the time spent with her grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Survivors include five children, Gary (Joyce) Zwirschitz of Virginia Beach, VA, Diane (David) Weigel of Shawano, Jon (Special friend Ronda Rades) Zwirschitz of Mattoon, Jane (Tom) Schmidt of Shawano and Tim (Barbara) Zwirschitz of Mattoon; 10 grandchildren, Brad (Inga) Zwirschitz, John (Jennifer) Zwirschitz, Grant (Christy) Schultz, Aaron (Sarah) Schultz, Quinn Schultz, Justin (Pennie) Zwirschitz, Bethany Watters, Kiley (Randy) Pingel, Tracy (Eric) Chernetski and Eric (Niki) Zwirschitz; 44 great-grandchildren; two sisters, Jeanette Pecha of Antigo and Carolyn (Arvid) Evensvolde of Gold Canyon, AZ; two brothers, Norbert (Audrey) Beck of Cottage Grove, MN and Phillip (Margie) Beck of Antigo and sister-in-law, Caroline Beck of Antigo.

Edna was preceded in death by her husband, parents, step-father, Rudy Mondl and siblings, Bernice Kirsch and Harold, Sylvester and Clem Beck.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11AM on Friday, February 9, 2018 at St. Joseph Holy Family Catholic Church, Phlox. Fr. Charles Hoffmann will officiate. Interment will be in Holy Family Catholic Cemetery, town of Hutchins. Visitation will be on Friday from 9AM until the time of Mass at the church. Jason Ronald Dickman

Jason Ronald Dickman, age 43, of Lily Road in Birnamwood, died Friday, February 2, 2018 in his home after a short battle with cancer.

Jason was born in Antigo on July 17, 1974 to loving parents Ronald and Patricia (Meyer) Dickman of Birnamwood. Jason was joined in marriage to Darcy (Durocher) Dickman in 1998, and they became parents to three beloved children. Known as “Ripper” through his life, Jason loved being outdoors, watching his children’s sporting events and activities, and making memories hunting and fishing with his family and friends. He graduated from Wittenberg- Birnamwood High School in 1992, completed the carpentry apprenticeship program and was employed as a carpenter for the last 24 years for the North Central States Regional Council of Carpenters Union, working most recently for Miron Construction.

Jason is survived by his wife, Darcy (Durocher) Dickman; three children, Wyatt Leo, Owen Jason and Reese Libby, all of Birnamwood; his parents Ronald and Patricia (Meyer) Dickman of Birnamwood; his sister and brother-in-law, Lori (Dickman) Koeppel and Jamie Koeppel of Birnamwood; niece Katelyn Koeppel of Wyoming; brother and sister-in-law Lance Dickman and Mel Buchanan; nephew Axel Dickman of New Orleans, Louisiana; his maternal grandmother Joy Meyer of Birnamwood; mother–in-law Mary (Jadin) Durocher; brother-in-law Thomas Durocher; nephew Dax Durocher; niece Danica Durocher; brother-in-law Daron Durocher and sister-in-law Jen Durocher; nephews Joel Durocher, Emre Durocher and Drea Durocher all of the Freda, Michigan area and numerous aunts, uncles, cousins, and dear friends. He was preceded in death by his father-in–law Leo Durocher; brother-in-law Andre Durocher and paternal grandparents and maternal grandfather.

The funeral service will be held at 11AM on Tuesday, February 6, 2018 at St. Paul Lutheran Church, Birnamwood. Rev. Matthew Christians will officiate. Visitation will be on Monday from 4PM to 8PM at Schmidt & Schulta Funeral Home, Birnamwood and again on Tuesday from 10AM until the time of service at the church.
