WAUSAU, Wis. – The Marathon County Sheriff’s Department is warning residents to drive with extreme caution due to the overnight snow and sleet.

Even though the snow has stopped, winds  up to 20 mph are currently blowing snow across already plowed roads and drifting roads that have not yet been plowed. Deputies say the blowing and drifting snow could continue for most of the day, keeping visibility “extremely limited.”

Police are cautioning residents who live in rural townships to postpone travel until their roads have been plowed, or risk getting stuck in the roadway or ditch.

As always, deputies remind drivers to slow down and turn on their headlights in poor driving conditions, and make sure to leave plenty of space between vehicles, especially when following snow plows.
